We’re already somewhere between “worried about” and “fed up with” COVID-19. Yet here’s flu season, just around the corner.
Is anyone actually worrying about the flu in 2020? The answer is yes. COVID-19 is still raging, and the flu also has the potential to cause overcrowding in emergency departments as people try to sort out flu symptoms from COVID symptoms.
So, we’ve established that we’ll soon be looking not one but two infectious diseases in the face. What’s the best course of action? Our team at AFC Urgent Care NC would like to share some insight.
Why Do I Need a Flu Shot?
First, of course, you need a flu shot for yourself. The flu is no fun, and if you have a condition such as lung disease, heart disease or sickle cell disease, flu can be deadly.
Second, you need a flu shot to protect others—those who cannot get a flu shot. That’s called herd immunity, and it’s a good reason to get a vaccination even if you aren’t really afraid of the flu.
People You Protect With a Flu Shot
- Babies younger than 6 months
- People with allergies to antibiotics and vaccine ingredients
Why Is a Flu Shot Important During COVID-19?
Flu and COVID-19 share symptoms including fever, chills and body aches. If a lot of people get the flu this year, they could flood the health system and reduce resources available for people with COVID-19.
No one knows what having COVID-19 and the flu at the same time would look like, but it probably would be pretty horrible, too.
Keep Safe While Getting Your Shot
- Call ahead or go online to schedule an appointment.
- Wear a mask to your appointment.
- Don’t go if you have symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, or shortness of breath—reschedule instead.
